Have you ever applied for a job that you were worried you might have to take a pre-employment drug test for? Or maybe you work for a company that has random drug testing? Millions of Americans face drug testing in the workplace and there are some companies and industries where drug testing at work is more prevalent. In fact many employers both in the US and worldwide use some form of drug testing to screen their employees before hiring them or when they get a promotion. To try and learn more about drug testing it the workplace, JDP recently analyzed a years’ worth of search trend data from Google to identify the companies with the employees most fearful of drug testing at work. They analyzed data around searches based around the term “does my company drug test”.
They analyzed over 150 of the top companies in the US around that specific search term for each company. From there they were able to see which employees are Googling the most about whether or not their employer drug tests. The results provided an interesting look at who’s employees are the most concerned about getting drug tested at work. To try and make this a fair comparison across different companies, they researched the number of employees for each company and then divided the total search volume for the year by the number of employees. This gave them data around the number of employees per search.
The lower the number of employees per search, means there are more searches per employee. JDP also identified 8 specific industries were searches for employment related drug testing searches were high. Let’s take a deeper look at the analysis.
Those industries are as follows:
- Fast food (Sonic Drive-In, McDonald’s, Panera Bread, etc.)
- Superstores (Target, Costco, Kohl’s, etc.)
- Grocery stores (Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, etc.)
- Tech companies (Amazon, Tesla, Apple, etc.)
- Discount shopping stores (Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, etc.)
- Apparel stores (Foot Locker, Ross Dress for Less, JCPenney, etc.)
- Shipping companies (UPS, FedEx)
- Hardware stores (Menards, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc.)
They also did a more comprehensive breakdown of the top 60 American companies. Surprisingly enough Aldi took the top spot, followed by PetSmart, Sonic Drive-In, GameStop, McDonald’s, Ulta Beauty, Hobby Locker, Target and Trader Joe’s rounding out the top 10. Major tech companies like Google, Amazon, Apple prevalent on the list as well as major banking companies like Chase and Bank of America. There was also a wide range of fast food companies and major grocery stores that were well represented as well.
