Ahead of the 2024 elections across Europe, TikTok has announced the addition of a local language Election Centre in its app that is dedicated to providing people with factual local voting information for all 27 individual EU Member States.

The social media company has taken into consideration the substantial number of people across Europe that visit its platform - more than 134m of them, many of whom are also going to be casting their votes in the upcoming European elections. Owning responsibility as a popular social media platform, TikTok will be working with local electoral commissions and civil society organizations to set up in-app Election Centers where its community can find “trusted and authoritative information.”

TikTok’s Election Centers will be mainly highlighting official voting information, hence combating potential misinformation. The company will be appointing 6,000 workers that ensure moderation of EU language content.

TikTok also claims that it is eliminating misleading content across its platform in general at a higher rate than ever, and working on content moderation with nine different fact-checking organizations across Europe to verify the accuracy of posted content in 18 different European languages.

In the same domain, TikTok will also be setting up expert teams dedicated to countering election manipulation efforts. “We report the removals of covert influence networks in our quarterly Community Guidelines Enforcement Reports. In the coming months, we’ll also introduce dedicated covert influence operations reports to further increase transparency, accountability, and cross-industry sharing,” states the company.
