Meta’s new decentralized communication app ‘Barcelona’ is
going to be launched next month, according to a report from ICYMI. The app is
going to be linked to Instagram, which is why it is being called “Instagram for
your thoughts.” Additionally, users will be able to join it using their
Instagram credentials, as well as have their Instagram followers synced with their
Barcelona profiles.
Barcelona is speculated to function like Twitter, comprising of a chat-based feed where users will be able to write and share posts containing up to 500 characters. Like on Twitter, you will also be able to add links, photos, and up to 5 minutes long videos in your posts. Similarly, there will be engagement options of in-stream replying, liking, and re-posting, as well as creator control options.
ICYMI further reports that users’ blocked accounts and
hidden words on Instagram will automatically carry over to their Barcelona
profiles. Moreover, the community guidelines of the app will be the same as
those of Instagram.
For some time now, Meta has been reaching out to selected creators,
including high-profile celebrities, to brief them about the new platform, so
they can have early access to it before a public release.
