Snapchat plans to launch in-app tools for voter awareness

The U.S. elections are around the corner, and Snapchat is trying to prepare the Americans for it. So what exactly would roll out? Well, Snapchat plans to release new updates in the upcoming month i.e., September. These features will help the American users to register themselves for voting and along with providing them with information and resources needed for participation. Furthermore, there will also be a voter checklist that will have the guidelines on where and how to register oneself. The voter checklist card was launched the first time in 2018, which, according to Snapchat, helped 450+K users in registration.

As per the research from the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE), the youngest voters who just got eligible for voting are totally unaware of the registration process. Two-thirds of the voters are between 18-21 are likely to get the information from their colleges but, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and fewer classes, voter drives in colleges would definitely be affected.

Snapchat confirmed that around 75% of its users age between 13-34 years from the United States. Out of 100 million users from the U.S. only, 80% of users age 18 or above. Moreover, around 300K-500K users turn 18 each month. These stats show that Snapchat would be an excellent way to help people prepare for the upcoming election, especially the younger ones.

Snapchat has made a third-party application debuted Minis that will be present within the Snapchat app. Also, a partnership with TurboVote will be built to keep a count on the number of Snapchat users that have registered for voting. A link will be provided in the Snapchat app that will redirect the user to TurboVote for registration. A filter will also be launched for promoting the registration day.

Another great feature that Snapchat is planning on is “Before You Vote” with BallotReady that will guide the users about where and how they can vote. It will also have tools for filling the ballot papers and locate their designated polling stations.

All the features that will be launched for elections will be permanently available on the app. It will remind the users constantly for registering themselves even when there are no elections ahead.
