Pinterest has been enhancing its e-commerce options and
recently it has released a new AR feature that allows users to ‘try on’
lipsticks before they buy them. This way they can check out how the lipstick
shades would look like on them before they proceed to shop.
Pinterest will add a ‘Try On’ button to various selected
lipsticks pins. All you’ll have to do is to tap on it and a reverse-facing
camera with a lip shade slider will pop up on the screen, you can choose the
shade you want to try and the option will enable you to do it.
After you find the shade that looks good on you, Pinterest
will display related product pins that would o well with that color.
“Simply open the Pinterest camera in search, click “Try on”
to find different shades and swipe up to shop from brands like Estée Lauder,
Sephora, bareMinerals, Neutrogena, and L’Oreal brands NYX Professional Makeup,
YSL Beauté, Lancôme, and Urban Decay. A “try on” button will also appear on
select products, as well as in search with related terms like “matte lipstick”
or “red lips”," explained Pinterest.
The new option looks quite like YouTube’s try on ads that
are shown through split-screens. So you can check them out with your camera
while playing the video at the top. Through this feature, you can check out
makeup being talked about in the video you are viewing.
Pinterest hasn’t offered this feature only to specific
brands or products but initially, this feature is only available to selective
brands. Other brands that want to take part in this can apply for it.
Pinterest has also introduced an option to try lipsticks for
different skin tones, so users can pick lipsticks that match with their skin
shade. The platform has been focusing on inclusion and diversity and has made
it a key focus of its business.
It has also been focusing on user wellbeing and has proved
it with an announcement that says that the new feature "won’t include skin
smoothing or image altering effects that make you look less like you (as you
might see on some other AR technologies)". This is great as it gives users
the benefit of AR without any tools that can give them an unrealistic view of
their appearance. As unrealistic depictions one a person’s appearance can lead
to negative effects on a person’s mental health, this consideration by
Pinterest is worth an applause.
What do you think about the new feature? We can’t wait to
see what similar features Pinterest has in store for its users in the future.
