Digital Marketing: Change with time
I’d like you to take a moment and think about the last time you went an entire day without using the internet. Takes a long time, right? In a world where our jobs and a massive portion of the economy itself is dependent on bits of information traveling back and forth over the globe, it’s preposterous to imagine shutting yourself off from the internet for an entire day. But it wasn’t always this way. Businesses weren’t always coming at you with ads asking you to install the newest version of their app, or offering you discount coupons or special offers.

When the internet first came out, several pundits were dismissive of its capabilities. Businesses stuck to their brick-and-mortar, print and TV advertising, completely unaware of the capabilities of the technology they were looking at. After the internet first appeared in 1990, it took almost 3 whole years (!) for the first clickable banner to appear online. In 1993, companies finally began to dip their toes into the waters of digital marketing, and an industry was born. Archie was the first search engine on the internet. But, by 1996, due to increasing adoption of the internet, several smaller search engines like Alexa and HotBot came to be.

You can’t effectively analyze the current spectrum of digital marketing without understanding the history of Digital Marketing. Several of today’s technology giants were renegades and innovators in the early days of the internet. Today, our social media profiles are living, breathing digital extensions of our real-life selves. But when the first social media website Sixdegrees.com came out in 1997, not many people thought social media would become the force it is today. The history of digital marketing is an important window into the constantly-evolving technological landscape of today. If you’re a digital marketer, or even if you aren’t, it is a fascinating look at how much things have really changed in the last two decades.
