In 1777 the original design of the flag with the 13 stripes and 13 stars, that to symbolized the original 13 colonies, that formed the Union, was sown. With years as the number of stars in this new constellation grew, the number of stripes was decided to keep 13, to honor the original colonies. Hawaii was the last, 50th star, added to the flag. The modern design was made by a 17-year old student, for his school project!
