Dr. Douglas Steinbrech, M.D., F.A.C.S., has recently released an infographic on Gummy Bear Breast Implants. Referred to as Gummy Bear implants, because of the silicone gel’s consistency which resembles the look and feel of the sugary, well-loved candy. Gummy Bear breast implants are the latest generation of silicone breast implants, also known as cohesive, form-stable or highly-cohesive implants, and use advanced gel material and implant technology to produce a more natural result that maintain their shape better with no risk of leakage. Many other breast implants of the past have been characterized by their unnatural appearance, stiff feel and high risk of leakage among other possible complications. They were first introduced in Europe in 1995 and in Canada five years later, Gummy bear implants received FDA approval in the United States in 2013 and have a number of advantages over saline and earlier silicone options. FDA approved manufacturers of the Gummy Bear implants include Mentor, Sientra and Allergan.
Some of the advantages of the Gummy Bear implants is that offer quick recovery time, much softer and natural feeling, less scar tissue, maintain their shape longer up to 15-20 years and safer with lower risk of complications. Gummy Bear implants are recommended only to women 22 years of age or older and the procedure costs an average of $6,500.00. Patients generally resume regular activity within a week of the procedure.
