Travel and vacation are fun escapes that people plan and anticipate for months and even years. Unfortunately, the rise of app-based rentals like Airbnb has led to a rise in rental scams and other dangers for travelers. Ooma does its part to keep travelers safe with a list of tips on staying safe while renting and traveling. They provided pre-booking tips and guidance on keeping travelers safe upon arrival.
To avoid scam rentals, the team recommends keeping all transactions and interactions limited to the hosting platform. They advise never paying with cash, gift cards, or wire transfers. Instead, use a credit card via the app whenever possible. Make sure to verify the location on Google Maps Street View to make sure it matches the photos in the listing. The team points out that some rentals don’t even exist in real life. A good rule of thumb is to remember that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
