From App Idea to Prototyping

Developing an app begins with a truckload of excitement. New ideas, amazing designs, fascinating features and functionalities, there are so many stimulating things that make app development an amazing project to take on. Like all things however, there comes a middle phase where matters slow down, designs need to be reviewed, features need to be rethought, code needs to be tested and a bevy of other technicalities that are crucial, yet less than thrilling.

This plateau often leads to a dampening of spirits among teams trying out app development for the first time. Knowing the journey of an app’s development cycle and all the steps it entails can facilitate a better understanding of the process, helping clients set the right expectations from their development teams.

The first thing a successful app needs is a problem. Yes, that’s right. Where there’s a problem, there’s an app with a solution. So before you delve into app development, find a real problem your target audience is dealing with, that no one has an effective solution to yet.

Not always requiring a reinventing of the wheel, this could be as simple as doing the same old thing like the morning news, but making it infinitely better than anyone else in at least one area – like offline reading, reading out text, or curated to individual interests. The idea is, either bring in an unprecedented service, or provide a simple service, but with a difference.

The Accessible Technology Skills Gap

The responses indicate that although companies clearly feel such investment is worthwhile, the skills gap can lead to increased costs and decreased productivity. Specifically, organizations are paying for significant on-the-job training or supplementing with external training to help their staff build these skills. One respondent lamented that "we resign ourselves to the fact we can hire very bright people but are going to have to start from square one when it comes to accessibility." Almost 40% said that jobs in their organizations stay open longer or go unfilled because of a lack of accessible tech skills among candidates.

Respondents project that the need for accessibility skills will only keep growing--which is great news for candidates looking for a way to stand out from the crowd! Among industry respondents, 83% reported seeing a moderate or significant increase in demand for accessibility skills over the last five years, and over 93% of industry respondents expect this demand will increase in the future. And 93.5% of all respondents reported that it was "very important" to them personally to hire more people with accessibility skills.

What is Big Data?

The BIG in big data stands for doing things big, but also about doing big things. Our brains are very good at spotting patterns, differences, and correlations but are not fast nor exact. A computer is capable of storing far more exact data than we are. New, state of the art technologies, collectively called “bigdata technologies” enable computers to spot patterns, differences and correlations faster than humans ever could.

The world has generated more data in 2017 than in the previous 5000 years added together. The volume of data continues to double every three years as information pours in from digital platforms, wireless sensors, virtual-reality applications, and billions of mobile phones reports the McKinsey Global Institute. Even the fastest computer is incapable of storing or processing all this data, which is why big data technologies use a highly choreographed network of such machines.

Everyone generates data: people, companies and nature itself. The more data you collect, the more informed your decisions are. Big Data is analyzed to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behavior and interactions. Big Data is mostly used for predictive analytics, user behavior analytics, or certain other advanced data analytics methods that extract value from data.

Analysis of data sets can find new correlations to spot business trends, prevent diseases, combat crime and so on. Scientists, business executives, practitioners of medicine, advertising and governments alike regularly meet difficulties with large data-sets in areas including Internet search, fintech, urban informatics, and business informatics. Scientists encounter limitations in e-Science work, including meteorology, genomics, connectomics, complex physics simulations, biology and environmental research. Thus, Big Data can help answer the major questions in almost any field of activity.

How to stay safe when using public Wi-Fi

A good Wi-Fi signal comes just above water and just below air in the ‘hierarchy of needs’ of today’s digital nomad.. When you’re out in town (or miles from nowhere) and spot the coveted ‘three radio waves’ icon, the relief is palpable. For those without pricey 4G plans, public Wi-Fi is the only way to keep up with work and friends while out and about. But just as you wouldn’t sip water from a public tap unless you were pretty sure it was safe to drink, you need to be cautious about the Wi-Fi networks you dial into.

Most of us don’t take precautions – and that’s one reason why cyber-crime and hacking are so prevalent. One of the most common ways that hackers can access your data is through a ‘man in the middle’ attack. The hacker finds a security flaw in the cafe or shopping centre’s router, and exploits it to access the data that passes between you and the hub. To reduce the chances of getting ‘man-in-the-middled’, you need to check whether the public network you want to use is secured or unsecured before you join it. A quarter of all public Wi-Fi hotspots are entirely unencrypted.

So, only use networks that require a log-in and password. But even the most secure-seeming public networks are targeted by hackers. So you can also improve security on your end, by avoiding signing in to sensitive websites (such as online banking) while away from home. If you must sign in on the go, try to maintain different passwords for each account you use, and always sign out when you’ve finished what you’re doing.

Public Wi-Fi is a precious resource! It’s great to have it around. But while nobody ‘expects’ to get hacked, millions are each year – so why not tune up your online security with our new guide to staying safe on public Wi-Fi? The benefits of Wi-Fi-on-the-go only outweigh the risks until trouble strikes. With the right precautions, you can seriously reduce the chances of that happening.

The Tech Skills Gap By the Numbers

Since PEAT's founding in 2013, we have helped dozens of companies build accessibility awareness into their workplace. The majority of the companies in our network now have accessibility policies and programs in place. They are also increasingly making digital accessibility an imperative, not an afterthought, for both their internal systems and the products and services they bring to the marketplace.

They are doing this because they have looked at the business case and know that this is good for the bottom line and the right thing to do. But PEAT has found that a current major barrier is that many organizations can't find job candidates with the accessible tech skills they need--and 57% report that as a result, their products and services are less accessible than they want.

In December 2017, PEAT convened more than 60 leaders from across the tech sector to discuss how to increase accessible workplace technology. One major issue identified was a lack of availability of accessible technology skills in the IT sector.
