After an unsuccessful attempt at reaching a new rights agreement, TikTok and Universal Music are parting ways, which will likely have a significant impact on TikTok, considering that music is a key element on the platform.

The decision was announced by Universal Music, revealing that it will pull out from TikTok on the 1st of February, after a partnership of 3 years. The music company also claimed that the reason behind its withdrawal has been due to TikTok’s offered deal being insufficient to compensate for its artists and protection regarding generative AI.

“Upon expiration of the current agreement, Universal Music Group, including Universal Music Publishing Group, will cease licensing content to TikTok and TikTok Music services,” adds the music company.

Not planning to leave audio behind in the world of AI, Meta has launched a new AI project ‘AudioCraft,’ designed for people to create “high quality audio and music” using text prompts. Does this mean that anyone can now produce music without playing notes, instruments, or specific skills? Seems so.

AudioCraft is created based on open-sourced research models of generative AI including MusicGen, AudioGen and EnCodec. The characteristics of the three models are as follows:

MusicGen is capable of generating music from text prompts. It has been trained with Meta-owned, licensed music.

AudioGen has been trained on public sound effects including environmental sounds and sounds of nature and animals. Like MusicGen, it too generates audio from text prompts.

EnCodec is a decoder, that Meta has just released a revamped version of. This model generates higher quality music with fewer prompts.

In his broadcast channel, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that Instagram is launching a new music option in photos that will let users add songs to their photo carousels. He further added that the option is already available in some countries.

The ability to add music in single photo posts on Instagram exists, however, the ability to add it in carousels is new and sounds more interesting. Carousels on Instagram are more popular than single photos anyway, which means that users would likely prefer to have music tracks divided within a photo thread, instead of adding them in single photos. Likewise, followers would most likely also enjoy listening to music as they swipe from photo to photo.

TikTok has updated its app to limit users’ ability to add music to video clips. More specifically, the social company has reduced the number of songs that can be used for clips on the app.

It is speculated that TikTok is doing this as a way of experimenting with the possibility of negotiating with music publishers in the future by putting a price on certain music tracks.

The update will also yield insights into how TikTok users perceive the value of music on the app, meaning whether it has a significant impact on user experience or not.
