The History of the Tie
Menswear has evolved over time, but have you ever wondered where certain accessories actually originate from? In this infographic, we explore the history of the tie and how its symbolism has changed over time, from country to country.

Interestingly enough, the tie was (primarily) not intended as a fashion accessory, but rather as a military accessory, and a lot of its evolution remains within military history itself. The earliest presence of neckties during the 1660s can be traced back to Croatia and served a more practical purpose. Soon enough, the French became intrigued with the concept of a necktie, and it's also thought that this might have been the time in history where the phrase "cravat" was born. The cravat thereafter remained a symbol of aristocracy for quite some time, until it became more widespread. This lead to designers around the world adopting the cravat and transforming it into the tie that we know and love today. No longer just a symbol of status, the tie is now worn by men from all social classes for all kind of events, making it a staple item in many men's wardrobes.
