Surprise Album
Prior to 2013 the release of an album typically came with weeks if not months of intense promotion. All that changed in December of 2013 when world leader Beyonce released her 5th album, seemingly out of thin air on December 13th 2013. Since then many artist have decided to use the same or similar tactics to release their own albums. Although the sample size is probably still too small to draw major conclusions, and most artist are not at a level to be able to even consider performing such a seemingly dangerous maneuver it is still quite interesting to see how it has worked out for some artists versus others.

It's not always a straight forward release, look at the strategy U2 or Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment employed. Most recently Miley Cyrus used her own version of the tactic by announcing the release of her new free album after hosting the VMA's. Check out the graphic below.
